Welcome to summer! Our June newsletter contains three articles on crucial topics we believe that our readers ought to know more about. I hope you find the pieces informative, helpful and thought-provoking.

If you haven’t visited our website recently at
www.AtticusCanada.com. I invite you to check it out. We re-designed the entire site to make it a more powerful resource for you. It is tailored to meet client requests for additional features such as a better organised newsletter archive and an enhanced case study section. We also simplified navigation and gave the entire site a graphic “make over.”

I want to congratulate Barbara Yassine, president of Royal Sceptre Inc. King City Ontario. She won a pair of tickets to The Lord of the Rings in a drawing we held among people who completed our recent on-line survey. Thanks to everyone who took a few moments to participate in the study. The information you provided is enabling us do an even better job of helping you deal with your business issues and to meet your goals.

We hope that your summer is off to a good start. As always, I welcome your feedback on our performance, our newsletter, the revamped website and our CD, Secrets of the Master Sales Organisation™.

Do we have a North American Common Market?
By Steve Ryan

As the “Border comes down” and we see the blending of Canadian and US markets, the question becomes more important: “What is the most efficient way to run a business that spans both countries?”

We see some businesses approach the two countries as if they were independent markets, and they run two separate organizations. Just as often, we see attempts to operate as if the border represents nothing more than an administrative exercise. These businesses make allowance for customs formalities, but choose not to complicate their organizations by catering to national differences. The truth is that these two extremes will rarely reflect the true dynamics for any border-spanning business.

How to retire on the value built in your business
By Colin West

Corporate types take their pensions and professionals convert their RSPs. But business owners face a unique situation as they look towards retirement. Who’s going to buy my business? What’s it worth? How will I get paid out? All too often, people facing these questions act like ostriches, burying their heads rather than face the issue directly.

Like preparing a will, succession planning is totally ineffective if done too late. Experts agree that succession planning must be done three to five years ahead of the succession event. For optimal results, the further ahead the better, even up to 10 years.

In Canada, 90 per cent of all businesses are family run, so you’d think succession planning is high on everyone’s priority list. Wrong! Even though 71 per cent of businesses will face succession within the next ten years, and 41 per cent will do so in only five, barely 7% of those facing succession issues in five years have a formal plan in place.
