I
hope you and your family enjoyed a wonderful holiday
season, and that you returned to your desk refreshed,
energized and looking forward to meeting the planned – and
unplanned – opportunities and challenges that 2008
will bring.
A noticeable number of owners, executives and managers
told us that they had a record, or near-record, year
in 2007 despite a strengthening dollar and an increasingly
global competitive marketplace. I was both honoured
and proud when so many of you called or e-mailed
me to say that Atticus Principals were instrumental
in helping you achieve such strong results.
Over the past 12 months, our Principals handled an
ever-broadening array of assignments. We helped companies
restructure sales departments while showing ways
to make existing products more profitable by redefining
the marketing strategy. We worked with companies
both very large and quite small to improve the productivity,
efficiency and profitability of manufacturing processes.
We helped find capital for growing organizations.
And our Principals were called upon for an increasing
number of both short- and medium-term assignments
for clients with a need for experienced, senior executive
management help “right now” when it was needed, short-circuiting
a problem before it became a crisis.
Our newsletter continues to grow, surpassing 50,000
subscribers and demonstrating that we’re covering
topics that have great value to readers. Rare in
this interactive world, our newsletter’s “open and
read” rates are considered the highest in the industry,
with each issue producing a growing amount of e-mail
feedback. Finally, we believe that our company is
now the fastest growing interim management firm in
Canada, I thank all our clients for their support
as we continue to be an integral part in their success.
Here’s hoping that, for all of us, 2008 is a very
good year.

Driving
Blindfolded Is A Recipe For Disaster
By Inder
Chohan and Peter Oakes
Owners,
executives and managers need to bring a scientific
decision-making process to their businesses. To do
so they not only have to measure the past but also
to plan and measure the future. The way to
do this is to stop driving blindfolded and look at
the executive dashboard.

Developing
A Proactive Strategy To Deal With The Soaring Loonie
By Bruce Johnstone
That is the challenge confronting many Canadian businesses
that profited from exports to the US when Canadian
dollars were cheap, especially since the Loonie is
likely to outpace the US dollar for years to come.
